Marat/Sade, produced by Lab Loki in collaboration with the Reykjavík City Theatre and MurMur Productions, is a powerful exploration of repression, desire, oppression, and revolt — the marginalized against authority.
Peter Weiss’s Marat/Sade (The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade) is one of the landmark plays of the 20th century, known for its layered structure and provocative themes. In this play-within-a-play, the inmates of Charenton asylum stage a production under the direction of the infamous Marquis de Sade, reflecting the tensions of the French Revolution through their own fractured realities.
Lab Loki’s and the City Theatre’s production brought together some of Iceland’s most distinguished veteran performers — many in their seventies and eighties — creating an unforgettable and visually striking performance.
The project was supported by the City of Reykjavík and the Ministry of Culture and Business Affairs, through the Theatre Fund and the Artists’ Salary Fund.
Marat/Sade premiered on the New Stage of the Reykjavík City Theatre on 20 January 2023 and played to full houses throughout the spring.
